(They have a website, who knew?!)

Not to spoil my review, but this is about my 6th time visiting this place.  I live about 12 miles away and there is nothing close to it that I visit.  But when I am on the Eastside, I have to stop.

I love Mexican grocery stores by themselves and then add a Taqueria?! Get out…great idea.  It’s like having a burger place attached to a butcher.

Before I start the review, I have to tell you that I know very little Spanish and my first two times here, the lady at the Taqueria didn’t speak English.  I ordered a Diet Coke, but got an orange soda.  My third time going, I fumbled through ordering in Spanish and when I was done she said “I know English” about as clear as if she just came off the Mayflower.  I felt like an asshole.

What I Ate: 2 Chorizo Tacos $1.75 each, 1 Chicken Taco $1.75 each and a Carne Asada Burrito $4.00.

Burrito

Burrito

I usually stick to eating tacos here, but I tried the burrito.  OH MAMMA was this good!  It was huge and loaded with some of the best Asada that I have had.  It had sour cream, cheese and a little bit of lettuce.  I find that Mexican sour cream is very different than at the normal grocery.  Buy some, do a taste test and you will get it.  I added some of the homemade red sauce from the random bottle on the counter and it brought a nice heat and flavor.  This was so good and I am not sure how to describe it.  For $4.00, this was a meal, no need for the tacos but…

Chorizo Tacos

Chorizo Tacos

The chorizo tacos here also rock.  Great flavor and the chorizo has a big time kick to it.  Tacos are served with lime, onion and cilantro on a corn tortilla.  I add a little green and red sauce like in the pic and that puts it over the top.

The chicken tacos were a let down compared to the rest of the meal.  They were good, but a touch dry.  The star of the show is the Asada.

Would I Buy It Again? Yes, and HALL OF FAME.  I love this place.  I always take people  here that I know would freak (like my Mom).  It is out of some people’s comfort zone, but who cares?! Old school Mexican-Polka music is blasting at 125 decibels, the place is usually packed, the guys behind the taco counter always flirt with my wife, but when you are serving up grub like this, all the other stuff just doesn’t matter.

I know that some of you think that I am full of shit on reviews, but I know my tacos inside and out and I have had them coast to coast and these are some of the best.

  • Man, those chorizo tacos sound/look really good. Really decent prices at this place too.

“I fumbled through ordering in Spanish and when I was done she said “I know English” about as clear as if she just came off the Mayflower. I felt like an asshole.”

    - haha…I know that feeling, I’ve experienced that many times before. My Mom is actually from Colombia and I’m as gringo as they come so I’ve had plenty of opportunities to feel out of touch with the english/spanish issues when travelling to South America.

Great post…You know your latin grub.

  • Seriously, those tacos look top notch. I love places like this, they’re usually SO good. The “hole-in-the-walls” are the best!!!

  • I’ve passed this place several times, and wondered about it. now I’ll have to try it!

    • Just went there on Friday & it was even better than expected! I think I’m going to sneak down there today with my Son (6) who will eat anything once!

  • Love mexican?!? You gotta try Pancho’s — there are two: 96th and Allisonville and Michigan and 70th(ish –it’s in the strip mall by the McGraw-Hill building).

Oh so good — and the polka is there, too! I personally go for the chicken chimi, but everything is great!

    • Ya know, I tried the one at 96th and Allisonville about a year ago and I wasn’t that fond of it. However, it gets tons of great reviews…so I might have to give it a second chance. Thanks for the tip!

  • I do not live near Taqueria Guanajuato and have little time to get there. Now that I am on summer break, it is on my list of things to do. This place is a destination place to visit and eat. Well worth the drive from anywhere in the metro area.

  • They are remodeling their Oliver Street store (Just west of Lucas Oil Stadium at 1269 W. Oliver 46221 ph. 423-8697 ) and adding on a huge restaurant. It is absolutely stunning from the outside. So if you are in the downtown area, you should check out this location as well.

  • We love this kind of place- thanks for the post!

  • There is a place next to my husband’s old job [he worked there for 27 years, so we know this place well :D ] and it was exactly this – a Mexican owned grocery with a lunch counter in the back. The food and the salsa were sublime. They rock! [The salsa was made fresh everyday and you knew who made it based on the thickness and/or how spicy it was. And the emapadas? I will take 10 PLEASE!]

The best part is they carried fresh meat, like a butcher, and it was some of the tastiest whole chickens, calves liver and skirt steak I have ever purchased. One of the greatest regrets that he retired is we haven’t been able to get back to visit.
