Just a little light weekend entertainment…
*I was skimming the internet this past week and I came across this article about the McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish and how the supply of the fish used for the sandwich could be in trouble. I found this particularly funny since I hate the sandwich, but there are many out there that absolutely love the thing. My mother is one and WIBIA has talked about his love for them on this blog before as well.
Anyway, one thing I found particularly amusing and disgusting about the article was the fish (Hoki) that they use to make the sandwich. Next time you eat one, think about this guy staring you back in the face! Yikes.
*On another note, check out this post by regular reader Erin (celticheartdesserts) at her blog. Absolutely hilarious, Erin. Good work and we have been wondering the same thing! We miss Bear’s comments on every single one of our blog posts!
*I don’t know if you’ve seen the T.G.I. Friday’s commercials promoting Woody, but if you join Woody’s Facebook page and he gets 500,000 fans by September 30th, every one of his friends gets a coupon for a free Jack Daniel’s burger from the restaurant. So, if you haven’t joined yet and you don’t want to miss a chance at free food, join now (you’ll have to click the Register tab at the top)!
*Finally, speaking again of Facebook and in case you haven’t noticed yet, we now have a Facebook fan page! If you are a fan of this blog and a Facebook member, join our fan page using the banner ad on the right hand side of the page!
That’s it for now, so enjoy the rest of your weekend. I know I will be with week two of the college football season and the opening weekend of the NFL season. By the way, we’ll have another Tailgate Tour coming up early next week (probably Monday or Tuesday), so be on the lookout for that one.

Hey thanks for spreading the word about Bear!
Never was a fan myself.
Gosh my mom use to LOVE the Filet-O-Fish. She’d get like 2 of them at a time.

Please don’t take my Filet-of-Fish sandwich? If you MUST..take it away…begin by leaving off the scrumptious tarter sauce…and just wean me away….gently

DISGUSTING
09/11/2009 at 11:52 am
Does it look startled because it just learned it’s a dying breed, or because it just learned they become delicious Filet-O-Fish sandwiches?

Maybe it’s camera shy and just realized some crazy Kiwi scientist had taken it out of the water to snap a picture of it.
09/11/2009 at 12:11 pm
I’m not sure I’d be sad to see that sandwhich off the menu…forever.

Filet-o-Fish’s are the nastiest thing I’ve ever had the displeasure of eating, in my whole life.
09/11/2009 at 1:28 pm
Used to love ‘em, don’t now either. Especially because of that freaky creature. O_O
09/11/2009 at 1:30 pm
made my class critique on your post!

Looks like a fish/lizard. Don’t know if I’m going to buy another Filet-o-Fish sandwich again. They overpriced the fish sandwich anyway. So I rarely buy it.
09/11/2009 at 2:07 pm
I personally find the filet o fish absolutely disgusting. My father buys it regularly, however, not because of the taste, but because he is a strict Catholic who does not eat meat (Catholics don’t count fish as meat) on any Fridays. Whenever our family is on a trip or picking up some easy friday night meals, my dad gets the only thing he can: the filet o fish. I honestly think he’s come to enjoy the flavor over the years, perhaps out of necessity. Nonetheless, it would, sadly, probably be a fairly significant loss for him if the filet o fish were no longer on the menu.

@ locksmith. Agree, they are a little $$ lately. I wonder if they will have the double FOF during lent considering the supply.
@Ouconto… ha ha!
If you still want to see more fast food fish, check out our post yesterday on Shrimp Tacos from Taco Bell. (right sidebar under “Top Posts”)

Oh my. Just look at the plastic-ness of that cheese! I can almost see my reflection in its glazed-over state.
I can honestly say I’ve never had a Filet-O-Fish. Is it as good as a Big Mac? Oh wait, I’ve never had one of those either.
09/11/2009 at 2:51 pm
Yummy! I remember seeing the Filet-o-fish in Supersize me. Pretty awful. I like cheeseburgers still. Hopefully the cow population is doing fine.

[...] What goes into the Fillet-O-Fish. [...]

That fish looks absolutely disgusting.
& that sandwhich is the worst excuse for ‘dieting McDonalds style.’
Yay it’s going away!

ok this right here? this is why i like to be separated from my food sources. this is exactly why restaurants (including chinese ones) shouldn’t have fish tanks in their dining rooms.
i will never think of that warm and delicious, tartar-sauce-smothered, cheesy sandwich (on the oh-so-impossibly-fluffy-but-immediately-converted-to-glucose roll) the same way again.
p.s. it’s the long john silver’s fish, too?! *yikes*

On noes! Not my beloved filet o fish – the only fast food sandwich guaranteed to PERMANENTLY stain my clothing!
Y’all ought to be glad the thing isn’t made out of catfish [although that would taste better] The pic’ of that would really leave you screaming for the hills. Catfish are one ugly fish.
And lunch? Your comment on the bun is spot-on! My fav’ part!
09/11/2009 at 4:29 pm
Why does the MacCheese alwasy taste so disgusting? And how do they get away with the photos in store when the real food looks nothing like it?
I remember a few years ago reading that Hoki was the answer to the fished out fishing grounds of Europe. Maybe not.

When I was a kid, every year during Lent, my parents would inevitably get lazy one Friday and we’d end up eating Filet-O-Fish. They weren’t the kind of thing you’d ever want to eat voluntarily, but once or twice a year, when they knocked them down to 99¢ for the Catholics, it kind of became a tradition. No longer practicing, though, I haven’t found much desire for them in adulthood.
09/11/2009 at 8:08 pm
I always thought the Fish at Burger King was better. Probably horrible quality also.
09/11/2009 at 8:57 pm
I generally hate fast food, and I avoid it if I can. Fish o’ Filet and fries are the only thing I like at McDonalds. I can’t explain it, and if it is ever cut from McD’s, I’d have no idea what I would order if I were on a road trip and my better half was craving the Golden Arches. I swore off their burgers a decade ago at IU (even wrote it down and signed it on my dry-erase board). I suppose the chicken will have to do.
09/11/2009 at 9:36 pm
the hoki tastes pretty good for such an ugly fish….but i’m sure the fast food chains will quickly find an inexpensive substitute if they’re no longer able to use hoki
09/11/2009 at 10:04 pm
If the hoki supplies run out I’m sure they could replace it with an equally ugly fish; maybe if they find one that’s cheaper they’ll stop being so stingy with their fish (not likely but we gotta find some kind of plus to an animal being eaten to endangerment).
09/11/2009 at 10:08 pm
i like those sandwichs
09/12/2009 at 3:44 am
I think it’s hilarious how people are being put off of the filet-o-fish because of that weird lookin’ fish, when people are quite okay to eat lamb and baby cow!
P.S. I am a fan of those filet-o-fish.
09/12/2009 at 5:04 am
What’s the LOOK of the Hoki got to do with anything? If you’re so ignorant about nature that you’re afraid to eat animals or fish with an unattractive face, you deserve nothing better than junk food.
Many ugly fish make excellent and delicious food. This one, for instance: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anarrhichthys_ocellatus.jpg
Or this cute little guy:
http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fil:Monkfish.jpg
The issue of overfishing is quite another matter. THAT’S a good reason for boycotting it. One of million reasons for staying away from McDonald’s. When you buy junk from the junkiest and most imperialist restaurants on the globe, you get junk.

At last, an intelligent comment on this problem! Good job.
09/14/2009 at 12:21 pm
I too thank you!
09/12/2009 at 6:10 am
I read that article on McD’s filet-o-fish too…this burger is my fav @ McD. It is not popular among my acquaintances; i seldom hear ppl ordering it while i am at queue. Nowadays, i find it is only prepared on orders and many a times, not available…i thought because it isn’t popular but now, it looks like maybe McDonalds are restricting its supply in view of the situation…
09/12/2009 at 7:45 am
In the words of Hall and Oates “say it isn’t so” about the Fillet-o-Fish, a real classic. What happened to the Hoki? Can’t they use scrod or crappie – an actual fish by the way, pronounced crawpy?
“…maybe I can give out
a thousand reasons why
you have to say it isn’t so…”
09/12/2009 at 5:37 pm
I agree with Ribbie; they could totally get away with using another type of fish, I bet.
09/12/2009 at 3:14 pm
I’ve never like the McD’s fish sandwich myself, but I know loads of people who do. I’m partial to the BK fish sandwich, if I have to pick a fast food fish.
That Hoki fish looks kinda creepy, lol.
09/13/2009 at 12:28 am
question: why does the filet-o-fish sandwich made with only half a slice of cheese?
09/13/2009 at 12:33 am
I’m so glad I came across this entry! I used to eat the Filet-O-Fish every third time I had McDonalds as a kid (the other two times divided between a cheeseburger happy meal or a chicken nuggets happy meal).
I know I will be with week two of the college football season and the opening weekend of the NFL season.
Ah, yes, life has meaning again. Watching hours of TV on the weekend is justified once more.
09/13/2009 at 12:45 am
I’m glad you spread the word on the trouble the fish are in, but I don’t get what you see is so “funny” about it. You obviously don’t know that the entire world supply of fish is drastically reduced and shrinking all the time. There is literally no way we can continue to consume them like we do; we are now fishing in the farthest regions of the oceans where the last of the large stocks are.
This is a serious problem, both for humans and the many species of unique fish that may soon be extinct.
I see nothing funny about it.
09/13/2009 at 1:59 am
I love the Filet-O-Fish! I have not eaten a McDonald’s hamburger in like 15 years – they taste like rubber Frisbees.
09/13/2009 at 3:12 am
Don’t take this away from me too! NOOO!
09/13/2009 at 9:58 am
I just…can’t do it. An old friend in high school used to lather them with five packets of mayo, along with the tartar sauce…makes my stomach turn just thinking about it…
09/13/2009 at 12:12 pm
i personally think this sanwich isnt for me
09/13/2009 at 4:38 pm
I love Micky D’s Filet-O-Fish I would hate to see it go!!!
09/14/2009 at 11:59 am
jennifer~
If people keep thoughtlessly eating those sandwiches by the millions and billions, that’s exactly what’s going to happen. They will go.
Because the FISH THEMSELVES will be GONE.
Please think about what you eat and where it comes from.
09/14/2009 at 12:24 pm
Take a chill pill…we get it…you are concerned about world fish resource depletion. You don’t need to blast everyone that says they like the sandwich just because they have a different opinion than you.
09/13/2009 at 8:41 pm
I bet within the next 2 decades there would be law banning McDonald’s… just like tobaccos…
09/14/2009 at 12:23 pm
We can hope.
09/13/2009 at 11:12 pm
That is gross lol.. and a shame.. cuz, I have to admit, I love the Filet-O-Fish and for some reason I always called it Fish Filet. Rolled off the tongue easier:P
09/13/2009 at 11:50 pm
Before Subway and Quizno’s, the Filet-o-Fish was the only fast food fish sandwich available. It would be sad to see it go.

09/14/2009 at 12:46 am
Ummm, BK and Wendy’s both have fish sandwiches, and have had them for some time.
09/14/2009 at 11:58 am
asad: it will be much sadder to see the fish themselves go, would you not agree?
You can always eat something else, but the fish that go into those sandwiches have no choice.
Please get your priorities in order.
